Disadvantages of Renewable Energy

March 30th, 2012 at 12:14pm Under pros and cons

Renewable energy refers to any energy that is created using a natural source and is sustainable. Some common forms of renewable energy include solar, hydroelectric (hydro), wind and geothermal. Much research is being invested into these sources of power to make them more cost effective and reliable. Renewable energy is sustainable and better for the environment making it a growing area of industry. Even though there are many benefits of renewable energy three are also some disadvantages to this form of energy. This article will focus on some of these disadvantages.

Advantages Of High Altitude Training

September 13th, 2011 at 05:56pm Under pros and cons

High altitude training has become one of the most popular methods of training for endurance athletes. It is highly promoted by many sports scientists and personal trainers for the potential benefits. Altitude training can be completed by training at least 1,500 meters above sea level or by using a system that simulates the effects of altitude. It is widely being used by athletes from many professional sports because of the advantages of this type of training.

Advantages of Geothermal Power

May 2nd, 2011 at 01:12pm Under pros and cons

Geothermal power uses the heat from the earth’s core to create electricity. Most power plants use steam driven turbine to create electricity. This is the same in geothermal power plants. The heat from the earth is used to create steam or the steam that is directly released from the earth is used to drive the turbines. Geothermal power is used in 24 countries around the world and is considered to be a renewable and environmental friendly power source. The United States used the most geothermal energy with the geysers in California powering a total of 15 power plants. The Philippines and Indonesia also produce a lot of geothermal power.

Advantages of Hydroelectric Power

April 19th, 2011 at 01:18am Under pros and cons

Hydroelectric power is electricity that is generated by using the movement of water. To create electricity a power source such as steam, wind or running water turns a turbine. The turbine spins a large magnet or many large magnets inside a coil of copper wire. This creates mechanical energy which is converted into electrical energy via the magnets and copper wire. This electricity is then stored and sent through electrical wires to houses and businesses.

Disadvantages of Genetically Modified Food

April 14th, 2011 at 12:38pm Under pros and cons

Genetically modified food has been on the market since the early 90’s and since that time has attracted both positive and negative attention. Many people believe genetically modified food to be unsafe for human consumption and a hazard to the natural environment. There have been numerous studies undertaken to determine the risks involved with genetically engineering foods. As yet no set conclusions have been reached about the risk involved with genetically engineered food and strict guidelines have been established to regulate the genetically modified foods that can be sold to the consumer.

Advantages of Coal Fired Power

April 13th, 2011 at 12:51pm Under pros and cons

Coal fired power is created by burning coal in a large furnace to boil water. The stem from the boiling water is used to turn a large turbine at high speeds. The turning turbine is connected to a generator which consists of a large copper wire surrounded by magnets. As the wire passes the magnets they create a strong magnetic field. The wire spinning through the magnetic field creates electricity which is stored and then transferred via electrical wiring. The steam used to turn the turbine is then cooled and redirected back to the furnace where it is boiled again to make steam.

Disadvantages of Nuclear Power

April 7th, 2011 at 12:44am Under pros and cons

Nuclear power is generated from a metal called uranium. Uranium is mined in places such as Australia, Argentina, Canada, Brazil, China, France and many other countries. The uranium is used to create controlled nuclear reactions called nuclear fission. Nuclear fission gives off a tremendous amount of heat which is used to heat water to create steam. This steam turns turbines which produces electricity. In a standard fossil fuel electricity station the same thing occurs except the burning of the fossil fuel heats the water to create steam. Nuclear power plants can produce more energy using less fuel and thus they are seen as a more environmental friendly source of power.

Advantages of Genetically Modified Foods

December 11th, 2008 at 01:31am Under pros and cons

A few days ago, I wrote a post titled ‘what are GM foods‘. Today, I am going to look at all the advantages of growing genetically modified foods.

Advantages (Pros) of Genetically Modified (GM) Foods:

  • Saves the use of toxic chemicals. GM crops can be made resistant to pests, so pesticides do not need to be sprayed on them. This is also better on

Advantages of Nuclear Power

November 5th, 2008 at 11:30pm Under pros and cons

Everyone knows that nuclear power plants are, potentially, very dangerous. But what are some of the advantages of nuclear power? That is what this post will cover.

Advantages (Pros):

  • Nuclear power plants are more efficient than ever before. New technology has made them more reliable (they break down less often) and safer. People for nuclear power argue that this is evidenced by more and more nations (such as China) building nuclear power

Dangers of Fast Food

October 31st, 2008 at 01:36am Under pros and cons

Here are some of the potential dangers of eating fast foods.

  • They are very addictive! Many children cannot handle the hits of sugar and caffeine (from coke for instance) that they eat and drink.
  • Fast foods are very high in carbohydrates, very low in fiber and very high in fat. This is why people who eat a lot of fast
