Beavers are large, paddle tailed rodents who are semi-aquatic. There are two distinct species of beaver; the North American beaver and the Eurasian beaver. Beavers are the second largest species of rodent in the world and are well known for their dam building abilities and ability to fell large trees using their teeth. Beavers are herbivores and usually create dams close to food sources. They are able to stay submerged underwater for a maximum of 15 minutes. So where do these amazing creatures live? Read on to find out.

Where do beavers come from?
The two species of beaver, the North American beaver and the Eurasian beaver inhabit different parts of the globe. The North American beaver can be found in Canada (where it is also known as the Canadian beaver), the United States and in parts of Northern Mexico. It was also introduced into Finland, France, Poland and Russia as well as the Tierra del Fuego; an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South America.

The Eurasian beaver is not as numerous as the North American beaver due to it being almost hunted to extinction. There are small colonies that have been re-introduced to Europe. A small number of Eurasian beavers live in parts of Scandinavia, The Elbe River (which runs through the Czech Republic and Germany) and the Rhone River (Which begins in Switzerland and runs through France). A large community of these beavers live in Poland and on the Morava River in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The Eurasian beaver can also be found in Scotland, Bavaria, Austria, Netherlands, Serbia, Denmark and Bulgaria. This species of beaver may also be re-introduced back into Wales and England in the near future.

The natural habitat of both species of beaver is the riparian zone, which is the area where a river or stream meets the land. They also inhabit stream beds. Beavers create dams in rivers and streams which provide them with still, safe water in which to build a lodge. A beaver family will live inside a lodge in the center of the still pool of water. Lodges are made from branches and mud and are hard enough that not even wolves can penetrate them, making it a safe home for the beaver. This lodge is only used during the fall and winter months. During spring and summer the beaver will usually rove around wooded areas near stream and rivers. When fall starts again the beaver will return to their old lodge and dams and begin repair work for winter.

The Atlanta Hawks are a professional basketball team that compete in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The franchise was founded in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons, but during their first season the team was moved to Moline, Illinois and became the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. The team has moved a total of f 4 times since their founding and have been based in Atlanta, Georgia, since 1968. The team has only won a single NBA Championship, which came in 1958 as the St. Louis Hawks. Let’s take a look at where the Hawks play their home games.

Where do the Atlanta Hawks play?
Since 1999 the Atlanta Hawks have played their home games at Philips Arena, which is located in Atlanta. It is a multipurpose indoor arena and has been used for many different events including ice hockey, concerts, wrestling and ice skating. Currently, the Hawks share the arena with the Atlanta Dream (WNBA). Philips Arena seats 18,729 for basketball, although it can hold more than 21,000 for concerts. The arena took over 2 years to build at a cost of $213.5 million. Since the arena opened in 1999 the naming rights for the stadium have been owned by Philips Electronics.

When the team first moved to Atlanta in 1968 they didn’t have a stadium to move into so they played at Georgia Tech’s Alexander Memorial Coliseum while theirs was being built. Four years later they moved into the Omni Coliseum, best known as simply The Omni, which had a capacity of about 16,000 for basketball games. In 1997 it was demolished to make way for the Philips Arena, which is built on the same location. During the period of construction the Hawks played their home games at Georgia Dome and Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The center-hung scoreboard from The Omni is now hung in the lobby of the new arena.

The lifespan of a chipmunk is usually about 3 years in the wild, but they have been known to live up to 9 years in captivity. Let’s take a look at the habitat and distribution of these interesting animals.

Where do chipmunks live?
The majority of species of chipmunks are found within North America. At least one species of chipmunk can be found from Canada in the North to Mexico in the south. The only species of chipmunk that lives outside of North America is the Siberian chipmunk. This chipmunk is found in many parts of northern Asia, including parts of Russia, China, Korea and on Hokkaido, which is the second largest island of Japan.

Chipmunks can usually be found in forests where the construct large burrows. These can measure in excess of 3.5 m (11.5 feet) and often have several entrances that are concealed. The burrows have a designated area where the chipmunks deposit their waste to keep the rest of the burrow clean. They also store their food for winter in their burrow.

The Cardinals are the most successful National League team and have won a total of 11 World Series Titles. Let’s take a look at where the Cardinals play their home games.

Where do the St. Louis Cardinals play?
Since 2006 the Cardinals have played their home games at Busch Stadium. Interestingly, this is the third stadium that the Cardinals have played at to bear this name and it is for this reason that it is sometimes called the New Busch Stadium. The stadium took more than 2 years to build at a total cost of $365 million. It is owned and operated by the team and is sometimes used for concerts, as well as college and high school baseball. Busch Stadium seats 43,975, but this can be expanded by almost 3,000 spectators with standing room tickets. The record attendance came during the 2011 World Series when 47,399 people came to watch the Cardinals win their 11th World Series Title.

Before moving into Busch Stadium the Cardinals played at the Busch Memorial Stadium from 1966-2005. This stadium was demolished in 2005.

Where do flamingos live?
There are six species of flamingo in the world, four of these species live in the Americas and the two other species live in Europe, Asia and Africa. All flamingos live in habitats that are similar and they prefer salty, muddy waterways such as coastal lagoons, estuarine rivers and mudflats. They also like shallow, brackish bodies of water inland.

The greater flamingo lives in parts of Africa, south Europe and southern Asia. It is the most widespread of the flamingo species. The greater flamingo lives in mudflats and shallow, saltwater, coastal lagoons. The lesser flamingo is the most numerous flamingo and lives in lakes and dams in Africa and along the salt lakes in Northern India.

The Fours Species that live in the Americas are the Chilean flamingo, James’s flamingo, Andean flamingo and the American flamingo also known as the Caribbean flamingo. The Chilean flamingo lives in temperate South America in countries such as Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. There is also a small population of this flamingo in Utah and California. This species has grey legs with pink knees. The James’s flamingo is also known as the Puna flamingo and is found in the high Andes plateaus of Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Argentina. These flamingos have a very long neck with 19 long cervical vertebrate and thin stick like legs. They were thought to be extinct until a colony was discovered in 1956. The Andean flamingo is one of the rarest species of flamingo and is the only species with yellow legs and a three-toed foot. They also live on the Andes plateaus of Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Argentina. They migrate from their Chilean breeding ground in the summer to the wetlands of central and western Argentina. The American flamingo lives in the Caribbean and Galapagos islands. This is the only species of flamingo that naturally inhabits North America.

Since 1995 the Boston Bruins have played at TD Garden, which is a multipurpose arena in Boston. It has a capacity of 17,565 for hockey games. The arena also is also home to the Boston Celtics (NBA) as well as hosting various other concerts and sporting events. It was planned in the early 1990’s to replace the Boston Garden arena, which the Bruins had called home since 1928. Construction took about 2 years and cost approximately $160 million. The arena was renovated during the 2006-2007 season and a new high definition entertainment board was installed.

Did you know?
TD Garden has had many more than 30 names during its short life including; Shawmut Center and FleetCenter. It’s original name, Shawmut Center, did not last very long because the company merged with a larger bank. In fact, the seats were originally stamped with the Shawmut logo. These all had to be replaced before the stadium opened!

There are about 20 species of armadillo and range in size from the giant armadillo, which grows up to 150 cm in length, through to the pink fairy armadillo at just 12-15 cm. Armadillos belong to the same family as anteaters and sloths. Let’s take a look at the distribution and habitat of this unique species.

Where do armadillos live?
Most of the 20 species of armadillos are found in parts of Central and South America. Some species are found throughout this range while others have a far smaller distribution. It is believed that the largest concentrations of this animal can be found in the country of Paraguay. The nine-banded armadillo is the only species to be found in North Amercia, where it has spread from South America to Central America and throughout the south-eastern region of the United States.

Habitat
Armadillos build burrows by digging with their sharp claws. Most species dig these burrows in dry soil near potential sources of food, but some choose moist soil near a source of water. The habitat of each species is different and ranges from dry forests and grassland through to tropical moist forests.
