Over 200 teams (countries) attempt to qualify for the 32 spots in the finals. It has been held every 4 years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, apart from 1942 and 1946 due to WWII. Let’s take a look at who won the very first tournament.

Who won the First FIFA World Cup?
Uruguay was chosen to host the first FIFA World Cup because the country was celebrating a century under their first constitution and because the team had won the football gold medal at the 1928 Summer Olympics. 13 teams competed in the tournament and many European teams passed up the invitation because it was so far to travel. At the conclusion of the group stages four teams were left in the competition; Uruguay, Argentina, Yugoslavia and the United States. In the semi finals Argentina defeated the United States, 6-1 and Uruguay defeated Yugoslavia by the same score.

The host nation Uruguay met Argentina at the Estadio Centenario, Montevideo on July, 20, 1930. 93,000 spectators watched on as the home side defeated Argentina 4-2. Argentina led 2-1 at half time, but Uruguay scored three times in the second half to secure victory.

Did you know?
Uruguay also defeated Argentina to take the gold medal at the 1928 Summer Olympics.

Uruguay did not defend their title at the 1934 World Cup. They won the tournament again in 1950, but have failed to finish better than 4th since this date.

American forward, Bert Patenaude, is credited with scoring the first World Cup hat trick (3 goals in one game) against Paraguay. However, this wasn’t officially announced until 2006 (32 years after Bert’s death) because there was some controversy over who actually scored the goal!

The two countries couldn’t agree on which one would provide the match ball for the final so a different ball was used for each half!

The winner of the most Academy Awards for Best Director is John Ford with 4 wins from 5 nominations. His wins came in 1935, 1940, 1941, 1952, which also made him the first to receive consecutive awards in this category (1940 and 41). He directed over 140 films over his 50 year career and is widely regarded as the one of the most important filmmakers of all time. He also won 2 Oscars in other categories, which means he won a total of 6 Academy Awards. In second place are William Wyler and Frank Capra who both won 3 Oscars for best director.

Who has won the most world series titles?
The standout team of the MLB is the New York Yankees. Amazingly, they have appeared in a total of 40 World Series Championships. This also means that they have easily won the most titles with a total of 27 World Series championship wins and 13 losses (also a record). The next closest team is the St. Louis Cardinals with a total of 10 wins.

The New York Yankees won their first World Series in 1923, a team that featured the most famous player of all time, Babe Ruth. They have had many dynasties through the years, but the 1950′s was the most successful decade for the team with 6 titles. They have won 4 titles in a row on 2 separate occasions (1936-39 and 1950-53). The player who has been involved in the most World Series wins is Yogi Berra with 10 wins. He played catcher for the New York Yankees and later went on to manage the team after retiring.

There are two players that have won 20 Wimbledon finals (a combination of singles, doubles and mixed doubles). Billie Jean King won hers across both the amateur and professional era of the open. The NBA Playoffs consist of 8 teams from each division (the 3 division champions from each conference along with the team with the next best record). The best 2 teams reach the NBA Finals, where the NBA Championship is decided. The NBA began in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and changed its name in 1949 after merging with the National Basketball League. This means that there is some debate over which team was actually the first NBA Champions.

The first Basketball Association of America Champions
The first BAA championship was held in 1947 with the Philadelphia Warriors defeating the Chicago Stags 4-1 in the best of 7 series. The Philadelphia Warriors are still playing in the NBA today, but were moved to San Francisco in 1962, and are now known as the Golden State Warriors. The Chicago Stags folded in 1950.

The first National Basketball Association Champions
After merging with the NBL, the league was known as the NBA. The first NBA championship was won in 1950 by the Minneapolis Lakers who defeated the Syracuse Nationals 4-2 in the best of 7 series. The Minneapolis Lakers were the first team to create a dynasty and between 1950 and 1959 they won 5 NBA Championships. The Minneapolis Lakers later became the Los Angeles Lakers when they were relocated to Los Angeles. They currently hold the record for the most number of NBA Finals appearances. The Syracuse Nationals are now known as the Philadelphia 76ers.

Who won the First World Series?
Prior to 1903, the top two levels of organized baseball in the United States were the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (1871–75) and then the National League. Starting in 1884, the champions of each of these associations played each other to determine which team were the overall winner of baseball at the end of each year. This competition was not standard and the number of games played differed from year to year. These competitions were known as “The Championship of the United States”, “World’s Championship Series”, or “World’s Series” for a short time. The first of these games ended in a tie between the Chicago White Stockings and the St. Louis Brown Stockings.

With the establishment of a set format and rules, as well as the formation of the American league in 1901, the World Series was established in 1903. The first two teams to play in the Modern World Series were Pittsburgh Pirates of the NL and the Boston Americans (later known as the Red Sox) of the AL. This game was determined by a best of nine play-offs rather than the best of 7 play-offs we know today. The Boston Americans were the out and out winners of this first World Series with a 5 to 3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The person who has currently won the most Olympic gold medals is Michael Phelps of the United States of America. He has won an amazing 14 gold medals in the sport of swimming at the summer Olympics of 2004 and 2008. He won six gold in Athens in 2004 and then a further eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. In total Michael Phelps has won 16 Olympic medals, 14 gold and 2 bronze. Michael Phelps also holds the records for the most gold medals won at a single Olympic games. Interestingly, only 5 of his gold medals have been won during individual events.

The person who has won the most Olympic gold medals in the winter games is Bjørn Dæhlie from Norway. He has won a total of 8 gold medals in the sport of cross-country skiing. He has won a total of 29 medals at the Olympics and world championships between 1991 and 1999, making him the world’s most successful cross-country skier.

The woman who has won the most Olympic gold medals is Larissa Latynina from the former Soviet Union. Larissa won a total of 9 gold medals and is the only female athlete to hold that many medals. In her career as a gymnast she won a total of 18 Olympic medals, 9 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze.
Larissa Latynina currently holds the record for winning the most individual Olympic medals, she won 14!

The first WNBA Championship game was played on August 30, 1997. The Houston Comets beat the New York Liberty with the score 65-51. In its first season, the champion was decided in a single game so the Houston Comets were declared the WNBA champions. In future years, the finals have been decided by a best of three or five matches.

There are some interesting facts about the two teams that played in the first championship game. The Houston Comets would go on to win the first four WNBA Championships (1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000). The club eventually folded in 2008 having never won the competition again. Who Won the First Stanley Cup?

The first Stanley Cup was awarded to the Montreal Hockey Club (who were affiliated with the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association). The ‘won’ the trophy in 1893. The Montreal Hockey Club were the champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada (AHAC) and had defeated the champions of the Ontario Association (the Ottawa Generals) during the season. Trustees, appointed by Lord Stanley (whom the cup is named after), awarded the Stanley Cup to the Montreal Hockey Club due to these feats. However, the Ottawa Generals were upset as no challenge games had been played and the rules for awarding the trophy were not clear. The rules were subsequently changed to make it fairer.
