How do you cook rice

By: Want To Know It

The humble rice grain is one of the most popular food choices throughout the world and is second only to corn in worldwide production. It is believed that domestication began in China around 7000-5000Bc and is now eaten in almost every country in the world. Rice is popular because it is readily available, is not overly prone to spoilage and is cheap.

How do you cook rice?

Rice is traditionally cooked by boiling or steaming. The rice absorbs water during this process and becomes soft enough to eat. The two main methods of boiling rice are the absorption method and the rapid boil method.

The absorption method uses only enough water for the rice to absorb until it is cooked, whilst the rapid boil method uses more water and the rice is drained after cooking. Either of these methods requires only boiling water and the rice should be cooked long enough so that the rice is soft and fluffy. The time required will differ depending on the type of rice and it is best to refer to the cooking instructions on the packet for this information.

Alternative cooking methods

Rice can be cooked quickly and easily in the microwave by adding two parts water to every part of rice to a microwave container. Cook this until the rice is cooked to your preference (this will change depending on the microwave power). Leave the rice to stand for 5 minutes and then eat.

There are also many bands of electric rice cookers available. These make cooking rice very easy and can be used by almost anyone!
