How to Get Rid of Bats

By: Want To Know It

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about how to get rid of gnats. Today, I will look at how to get rid of another pest- bats! This post will tell you what you shouldn’t do about your bat problem, and then look at the only two ways you can get rid of bats for good.

What Not to Do:

1: Moth balls! There are many, many people who claim that moth balls are the magic solution to removing bats from your home. The recent research reveals that while using moth balls will actually get rid of bats, you have to use so many of them that it becomes very toxic to humans and other animal. This is because moth balls are carcinogenic (cancer causing). Unless you want to endanger your health, and the health of your pets, do not use moth balls.

2: Garlic! Sorry, but putting some garlic near the bats doesn’t do a thing!

3: Light and loud noises. Unfortunately, leaving the lights on or making loud noises will not get rid of bats. Bats like their home far too much to consider leaving for this!

4: Ultrasonic Devices. Ultrasonic sound will not get rid of bats. This is one of the most common myths going around currently but it is completely untrue.

5: Ammonia soaked rags. This is just another old wives tales. It doesn’t work!

Now you know what doesn’t work, let’s look at the two solutions for eliminating bats.

What to do:

Method 1: Call the exterminator. They will spray some very toxic chemicals to get rid of the bats. This is not a recommended solution, and is actually illegal in some states, as the chemicals used are extremely hazardous to human health. While this will get rid of bats, the better solution is…

Method 2: Force them to leave and don’t let them get back in. This can be a very difficult task so I strongly recommend calling in a professional wildlife removalist service. Just have a look in your local phone book or do an online search. Note that you cannot use this method when bats are breeding (April until August in Northern America) as the baby bats cannot fly on their own and will die, leaving a terrible smell and lots of dead bats to clean up! If you are trying to get rid of bats from trees then you should also consult a professional as they are very hard (near impossible) to remove.

Tip: Bats can actually be a great thing to have around your home. Many people build bat houses before removing bats from their attic so the bats have another place to go. This is because bats eat many bugs, insects and mosquitoes.
