Sodium is the 11th element on the periodic table where it is represented by the symbol Na. It is a soft metal, with a silvery-white appearance and it is highly reactive. It is the 6th most abundant element in the crust of the Earth. All of the natural sodium on the planet is made up of 23Na, which is the only stable isotope of sodium. This means that sodium is a monoisotopic element (element with only 1 stable isotope). However, sodium has many other isotopes that have been discovered.
How many isotopes does sodium have?
We already know that sodium only has one stable isotope, which makes up virtually 100% of the sodium on the planet. However, 2 other unstable isotopes are also found in trace amounts. These are 24Na and 22Na and they are known as cosmogenic isotopes because they are created by high energy cosmic rays interacting with the nucleus of an atom. 24Na and 22Na are also the two unstable isotopes of sodium that have the longest half life. 24Na has a half life of 2.605 years and 24Na has a half life of about 15 hours. 17 other radioactive (unstable) isotopes of sodium have also been identified and most of these have a half life of less than a second.
Did you know?
Certain types of radiation exposure converts some of the stable sodium isotope in human blood to 24Na. This can be measured to assess the radiation dosage that the person has been exposed to.

The Atlanta Hawks are a professional basketball team that compete in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The franchise was founded in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons, but during their first season the team was moved to Moline, Illinois and became the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. The team has moved a total of f 4 times since their founding and have been based in Atlanta, Georgia, since 1968. The team has only won a single NBA Championship, which came in 1958 as the St. Louis Hawks. Let’s take a look at where the Hawks play their home games.
Where do the Atlanta Hawks play?
Since 1999 the Atlanta Hawks have played their home games at Philips Arena, which is located in Atlanta. It is a multipurpose indoor arena and has been used for many different events including ice hockey, concerts, wrestling and ice skating. Currently, the Hawks share the arena with the Atlanta Dream (WNBA). Philips Arena seats 18,729 for basketball, although it can hold more than 21,000 for concerts. The arena took over 2 years to build at a cost of $213.5 million. Since the arena opened in 1999 the naming rights for the stadium have been owned by Philips Electronics.
When the team first moved to Atlanta in 1968 they didn’t have a stadium to move into so they played at Georgia Tech’s Alexander Memorial Coliseum while theirs was being built. Four years later they moved into the Omni Coliseum, best known as simply The Omni, which had a capacity of about 16,000 for basketball games. In 1997 it was demolished to make way for the Philips Arena, which is built on the same location. During the period of construction the Hawks played their home games at Georgia Dome and Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The center-hung scoreboard from The Omni is now hung in the lobby of the new arena.

The pituitary gland is a small pea-shaped organ that can be located at the base of the brain between the optic nerves. It is connected the rest of the brain via the hypothalamus. It secretes nine different hormones that assist in many bodily functions. The pituitary gland has a number of different functions. Continue reading to find out more.
What does the pituitary gland do?
The main function of the pituitary gland is to secrete hormones that cause certain bodily functions to occur. The pituitary gland acts as two parts despite the fact that it is one gland. The Anterior (front) pituitary, also known as the adenohypophysis, is responsible for the creation and secretion of 7 different hormones, each with their own function. The Anterior Pituitary Gland creates and secretes:
- Growth hormones: these cause the body to grow and change.
- Thyroid-stimulating hormone: regulates the thyroid function.
- Adrenocorticotropic hormone: helps regulate cholesterol levels within the body.
- Prolactin: stimulates the mammary glands to produce breast milk and plays a role in sexual drive,
- Luteinizing hormone: triggers ovulation in females and is responsible for the production of testosterone in males.
- Follicle-stimulating hormone: regulates the development and growth. It also initiates and regulates puberty, and reproductive processes of the human body such as pregnancy and sperm production.
- Melanocyte-stimulating hormones: stimulate the production of melanin in the skin and hair. Melanocyte-stimulating hormones also have an effect on appetite and sexual arousal.
The posterior (back) pituitary gland is responsible for the storage and secretion of two hormones which are oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone. Oxytocin is the hormone that is released to stimulate uterine contractions during labor and the menstrual cycle. It also plays an important role in breastfeeding and wound healing. Antidiuretic hormone is responsible for regulating the amount of water retained by the body. It also regulates blood pressure and vascular constriction.

Who discovered Jamaica?
Jamaica is believed to have been first discovered and settled by the Arawak and Taino indigenous people sometime between 4000 and 1000 BC. It was first discovered by Europeans in 1494 when Christopher Columbus landed in Discovery Bay, although some claim he landed in St. Ann’s Bay. He claimed Jamaica for Spain after landing and the first Spanish settlement was established 15 years later in 1509. The first settlement was named Sevilla, but it was abandoned in 1524. The capital was moved to Spanish Town, then called “St. Jago de la Vega,” which remained the capital of the country until the 19th century. Kingston was made the capital of Jamaica in 1872.

The largest producer of Potatoes is China which produces approximately 70 million tons a year. Let’s take a look at where the potato originated from.
Where do potatoes come from?
It was once thought that potatoes were domesticated in separate locations in the Americas because they grow wild from the United States to Uruguay. However, recent evidence has shown that the potato originated from the region of southern Peru. It is estimated that they were first domesticated between 8000 BC and 5000 BC.
The spread of the potato
It is thought that potatoes were brought back to Europe by silver miners in the 16th century. They quickly spread throughout Europe and were included in the local cuisines. They were introduced into Africa by colonists and also became popular in this continent. They spread to Asia sometime after 1600 and were considered a delicacy for a time before they spread throughout the continent. Potatoes were introduced to North America sometime after 1600, but they were not widely grown until much later than this. Today potatoes are grown on every continent of Earth, apart from Antarctica.
