Tips on Credit Card Consolidation

By: Want To Know It

Consolidating your credit card debt can be a terrific solution to help you get your debts under control. It can also be a disaster, and cause you to lose your home. Here are some tips on credit card consolidation (by means of debt consolidation).

  • Debt consolidation loans combine all your debts into one loan with a lower interest rate and a longer time to repay the debt. However, all these debts are usually secured against your home and/or other property. If you default on your payments, you will be in serious danger of losing this property.
  • To ensure you don’t default on payments, cut up all your credit cards and don’t use them until all your debts are cleared. Prepaid credit cards might be a good option, as you cannot spend more than you have. Research has shown that people who take out debt consolidation loans cannot control their spending, and find themselves in more debt only months after taking out the loan.
  • Also make sure you have a budget so you know exactly how much you can spend each week. It is also important to be disciplined and stick to your budget.
  • Consider transferring credit debt to other, lower interest rate, credit cards before taking out a debt consolidation loan. As previously mentioned, debt consolidation can be risky so this may be a better option. Some credit cards offer no interest for a set period of time (usually 6 months to 1 year) and you can transfer your credit balance from other cards to this one and begin paying off the debt slowly.
  • Do your research on any company offering debt consolidation. Some companies are very untrustworthy.
  • Shop around to find out which company will offer you the best deal. Some companies will also help you cut some of your debt when you take out a debt consolidation loan.
