The first winner of American Idol was Kelly Clarkson, who was announced as the winner on September 4, 2002. The final was contested between Justin Guarini, a favorite throughout much of the series, and Clarkson, who didn’t impress initially but was able to convince the judges and public with some strong performances in the later rounds. She beat 121 contestants that were selected from over 10,000 people who auditioned for the series.

Kelly Clarkson has since become the most successful Idol winner in the world. She has sold over 23 million albums and 39 million singles throughout the world. Her single “A Moment Like This” broke a 32 year old record held by The Beatles for the largest rise to number 1 (from 52nd place) in the history of the Hot 100 chart. In 2009 she broke this record again when her song “My Life Would Suck Without You” jumped from 97 to number 1!
