Sperm are small microscopic reproductive cells that closely resemble a tadpole in shape. These are the male fertility cells and are produced in the testicles of a mature male. The sperm contain 23 chromosomes, half of that required to create a new life. The other half are contained in the female reproductive cells, better known as the egg. Sperm are released via to male penis through a process called ejaculation. Once the sperm is ejaculated it either meets up with a female egg and produces new life or it dies. Stitches, also called sutures, is the name given to a medical device that holds the skin together after it has been severed. Stitches are usually applied with a needle and thread similar to stitching material together. Historically stitches were made from organic materials such as catgut or silk. Modern stitches are synthetic and can be absorbable or non-absorbable. Absorbable stitches are broken down by the body and do not require removal. Non-absorbable stitches must be removed from the body.
The Oregon Trail is the name given to an important historic trail that connected the various cities on the Missouri River to Oregon Country, which later became Oregon Territory. The trail spanned the future states of Kansas (partial), Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon. It spanned more than half of the country and was one of the most important migration routes that allowed pioneers to travel across the United States and settle new parts of the country. The trail was originally used by traders and fur trappers from around 1811, but at this time it could only be passed on horseback or by walking. In the 1830′s wagon trails were cleared in the region and eventually reached the Willamette Valley in Oregon. This trail was improved each year as more people made the journey. By 1845, just a few years after the trail had opened, more than 3,000 migrants made the journey and by the close of the trail it is estimated that 400,000 people had made the journey! Let’s find out the distance of the Oregon Trail.
A dream is a group of images, emotions and/or thoughts that occur in the mind during sleep. The cause and reason for dreaming is not well understood and many different theories have been developed on the subject. Dreaming usually occurs during rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep because the brain activity is high during this time. Dreams can occur at other stages of the sleep cycle, but they are generally not remembered after waking. The content of dreams can vary widely and the dreamer cannot usually control the dream. A person does not remember all of their dreams, but being awoken during a REM cycle means a dream is more likely to be remembered. You may have heard the urban legend that states an average dream lasts for 3-7 seconds. Let’s find out if that is commonly repeated fact is accurate.
A triathlon is a multi-sport endurance event that involves swimming, cycling, running without a break between the different events. The entire event is timed, even when the athletes change between swimming to cycling and cycling to running, and the winner is the first to finish the race. Unlike other multi events, in which athletes race for the best time, in the majority of triathlon events all of the competitors race at the same time. The history of triathlon can be traced back to the early part of the 20th century, but modern triathlon began in the 1970′s. Triathlon became an Olympic event at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
Most of us are aware that drinking water is essential for life and is the most important requirement of survival. Water is critical to many metabolic processes (important chemical reactions inside the body) and dissolves many substances for use in the body. Approximately 70% of the human body is made up of water. Humans lose water through sweat, urine, feces and breathing, which means that it must be replaced each day. It is estimated that each person in the United States consumes about 2 liters (0.5 gallons) per day from beverages and food. The amount of water required depends on the individual, exercise and climate. For example, dehydration (excessive loss of fluid) can set in after just 1 hour of exercising in a hot and humid environment. If you have ever wondered how long a person can survive without water, read on to find out.
The Amazon River is a massive river system located in South America. The main river runs through the countries of Brazil, Columbia and Peru. The river starts in the Andes Mountains and spans almost the entire continent where it meets the Atlantic Ocean in the northeast of Brazil. The Amazon basin is a huge area that covers almost 30% of the whole continent. The river and basin are one of the key ingredients that support the massive Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon river has long been regarded as the second longest river in the world, after the Nile River in Africa, but the debate about which river is longer still continues today.
The Panama Canal is a shipping canal that connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The canal reduces the time taken to travel between the west and east coast of the Americas as the previous route required sailing around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America (the canal saves about 5000 miles of sea travel). The canal was completed in 1914 after 34 years of construction and it is still considered to be one of the most difficult engineering projects that has ever been attempted in history. Many improvements have been made since the opening of the canal and it now sees an average of more than 14,000 vessels and 300 tons of shipping traffic each year! If you have ever wanted to know the distance from one side of the canal to the other, keep reading to find out.
