How do you get bed bugs
Bed bugs are a small insect that live on the blood of humans and other warm blooded animals. Their bite creates a red itchy area that causes allergic reactions. They are called bed bugs because they are commonly found in mattresses and bedrooms. They were almost wiped out from the United States in the 1940’s, but have since returned to epidemic proportions in a new global outbreak.
How do you get bed bugs?
Infestations of bed bugs are commonly picked up from motels and hotels. Although there is a greater chance of getting them from cheaper hostel type accommodation, even expensive resorts can be prone to infestations. The bed bugs latch on to the luggage of the visitors and then create a new infestation in the guests’ home.
The can also be transferred to your home with second hand furniture and clothes or band new furniture carried in an infested truck. Even second hand bedroom furniture and toys can be infested.
Apartment buildings are also prone to infestations of bed bugs that travel between the buildings. They are able to move quickly and easily along the boards and pipes within a building. Household pets can also carry bedbugs.
How do you get rid of bed bugs?
Synthetic gel based pesticides are typically used when a bed bug infestation is present. However, there are many effective methods of dealing with these insects. For example, they are susceptible to heat (typically steam), carbon dioxide, eucalyptus oil and spraying alcohol.
Using steam to kill bedbugs is now one of the most popular methods and together with the barrier method is very effective at reducing the infestation. Bed bug eggs are also killed by the steam which means re-infestation is less likely.
