A Hedgehog is a large spiny mammal that has a mixture of spines and fur. It is a nocturnal animal and can be found though parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and New Zealand. There are no native hedgehogs in either Australia or North America. Those that live in New Zealand are an introduced species. There are 17 different species of hedgehog. The Hedgehog has a pig-like snout and numerous spines. When threatened, the hedgehog will roll into a ball with its spines facing outwards. Some hedgehogs will ram with their spines when threatened. It is becoming more common for hedgehogs to be kept as pets due to their sociable nature and calm demeanor. They tend to get along well with other domesticated animals.
What Do Hedgehogs Eat In Their Natural Habitat?
Hedgehogs are considered to be omnivores. They will eat a mixture of plant and animal matter to maintain a balanced diet. Hedgehogs eat small lizards, snails, frogs, toads, snakes, bird eggs, mushrooms, grass roots, berries and melons. The hedgehog that is native to Afghanistan has a diet that consists mainly of berries. Hedgehogs also enjoy eating insects and earthworms. Hedgehogs are welcome in most people’s gardens as they will keep the pest population down. They will eat any dog or cat food left out with a particular preference for chicken flavors. They will also eat peanuts and raisins, but this is not recommended. Hedgehogs will often come and drink at garden ponds as they become quite thirsty.
What Do Hedgehogs Eat When Kept As Pets?
There is prepared food that is made especially for hedgehogs. This is balanced so that it contains the right amounts of proteins and fats. Good quality dry cat food is usually a good food source for a hedgehog. It is best however to avoid the fish flavors as hedgehogs are not partial to it. Pet hedgehogs will also each cooked, lean chicken and turkey, beef or pork. Baby food is a great way to give a pet hedgehog treats of fruits and vegetables. Avoid any purees that are high in sugar or contain dairy. It is best not to feed your hedgehog dairy as it is too high in fat and not high enough in protein. Milk will also give a hedgehog stomach pains. Hedgehogs should never be fed avocados, onions, grapes or raisins, chocolate, any raw meat or egg yolks, or any canned or processed food.

Yes, they are known to eat berries, melons and probably other fruits too. They eat plant roots and mushrooms as well!
