A brief history of Vienna
The history of Vienna dates back to at least 500 BC when the Celts settled in the region. In 15 BC the Romans fortified a city they called Vindobona. In the middle ages it was considered to be a cultural center and was effectively the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1804 it became the capital of the Austrian Empire and played a leading role in the politics of the region. The city was occupied by the Nazis in World War II and after the war the city was divided among the 4 powers. In 1955 the country was re-established and the city was free once again.
