The highest rank in the United States Navy is officially known as the rank of Fleet Admiral of the United States Navy, although it is most commonly called Fleet Admiral. The rank of Fleet Admiral is the only 5 star rank in the Navy and is equivalent to General of the Army and General of the Air Force. The rank was created during WWII and is not used during peacetime. It has not been used since WWII and this means the highest current rank in the Navy is Admiral.
A special rank entitled Admiral of the Navy was awarded to George Dewey in recognition for his victory in a key battle in the Spanish-American war in 1898. It has never been awarded since this time and ceased to exist after Dewey died. It is considered to be a higher rank than Fleet Admiral.
