What is the Smallest Country in the World
The Earth is divided into 234 different countries (also called nations or sovereign states). But what is the smallest country in the world? This post will answer that very question!
What is the Smallest Country in the World?
The smallest country on the Earth is Vatican City. Its total area is just 0.2 square miles (0.44 square kilometers). It is also the nation with the smallest population in the world. Just over 800 people live in Vatican City and none of them are permanent residents. Vatican City is the home of the Pope, the head of the Catholic Church.
The nation is so small that it has no sports leagues or stadiums. A national football (soccer) team has occasionally played games in Italian stadiums. There is no highway or airport in the country. However, there is a heliport and a railway connected to Italy. Under the Lateran Treaty, Italy handles the prosecution and detention of any criminal suspects that commit crimes in Vatican City.
Extra Note: The Pitcairn Islands have a population of just 50 people. However, it is not considered a sovereign state (country) so the Vatican City is the nation with the smallest population.
