The Denver Nuggets are a professional basketball team that compete in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference as a part of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Nuggets were established in 1967 as the Denver Larks (this was changed to Rockets before they played a game) as a member of the American Basketball Association (ABA). They became the Nuggets prior to the ABA-NBA merger in 1974 and joined the NBA after the merger occurred. The Nuggets have had some success since this time, including making the playoffs for a number of consecutive seasons, but they have never won a championship title. Let’s find out where the Denver Nuggets play their home games.
Where do the Denver Nuggets play?
The Nuggets play their home games at the Pepsi Center, also known as The Can, located in downtown Denver. It was constructed as a part of a general sporting facility upgrade in the Denver area. Construction took almost 2 years at a cost of $187 million. This is a multipurpose arena and is shared with other sports teams, such as the Colorado Avalanche (NHL). It also hosts other events such as concerts, conventions and more. The arena has a capacity of 19,155 for basketball games, but can hold more for concerts and other special events.
Prior to the opening of the Pepsi Center in 1999 the Nuggets played at the McNichols Sports Arena. This arena had a capacity of over 17,000 for basketball games. It was demolished in 2000 to create a parking lot for the Sports Authority Field at Mile High (the home of the Denver Broncos). In the early ABA years both the Denver Auditorium Arena and the Denver Coliseum were used for home games. These stadiums are both still standing today and have various uses.
