The San Francisco 49ers are a professional football team that compete in the West Division of the National Football Conference in the National Football League (NFL). The team was founded in 1946 as a member of the All-America Football Conference and joined the NFL in 1949 when these leagues merged. The team name came from the gold prospectors who moved to Northern California in about 1849 during the gold rush. Where do the San Francisco 49ers play?
Currently, the San Francisco 49ers play at Candlestick Park, which is located in the Bayview Heights area of San Francisco. It was originally built in 1960 as a home for the San Francisco Giants (MLB), but later became the permanent home of the 49ers. The stadium cost about $15 million to build and had a capacity of about 70,000 for football games. The 49ers have been the sole tenants of the stadium since 2000.
In 2014 the 49ers will move into a new stadium located in Santa Clara (currently known by the working title Santa Clara stadium). It will hold approximately 68,000 people, although the capacity will be able to be expanded to about 75,000 if needed. The estimated cost for the stadium is $1.2 billion and it is scheduled for completion in July 2014.
Kezar Stadium was the first stadium used by the 49ers after the establishment of the team in 1946. This stadium held about 60,000 people and remained the home of the team until 1971 when they moved into Candlestick Park. It was demolished in 1989 and remodeled from 1989 to 1990.
