Belize, formerly known as British Honduras, is a small country in both area and population. It was once a part of the British Empire, but gained full independence from the United Kingdom in 1981. Belize is a beautiful country with a warm tropical climate. The coastline is lined with small islands and the Belize Barrier Reef, which is actually the second longest barrier reef in the world. These factors make Belize a popular tourist destination. Let’s take a look at where Belize is located.
Where is Belize located?
Belize is located in Central America. It shares a border with Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west. To the east of the country is the Caribbean Sea and the many islands that are also part of the country. The capital city of Belmopan is located roughly in the center of the country and is found at the coordinates 17°15?N 88°46?W.
Belize currently has a border dispute with the country of Guatemala. Even though Guatemala’s president officially recognized the nation in 1992 the country still claims ownership of all or part of Belize. There have been many attempts to resolve this conflict, but there has been no resolution to this date.
