Iran is one of the largest countries located in the Middle East. Officially the Islamic Republic of Iran it is home to approximately 77,356,669 people and covers a total area of 1,648,195 square kilometers (636,372 sq mi). Iran is one of the world’s oldest civilizations, but the modern day republic was established in 1979 after the Iranian Revolution. It is one of the founding members of the United Nations and is considered a regional power in the Middle East. Let’s find out where Iran is located.
Where is Iran Located?
As mentioned in the introduction Iran is located in an area of the world known as the Middle East or Western Asia. This area can be located to the northeast of Africa and to the west of Asia. It includes countries such as Saudi Arabia, Syria, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq. Iran itself is one of the biggest countries in the area and shares borders with Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan to the north, Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east, Iraq to the west and Turkey to the northwest. It also borders the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the west. As it also has a border on the inland Caspian Sea both Russia and Kazakhstan are Iran’s direct neighbors to the north. The capital city of Iran is Tehran which is located on the North coast of the country near the Caspian Sea.
