Who founded Avon?
Avon was originally founded as the California Perfume Company in 1886. David Hall McConnell began selling books door-to-door. He quickly discovered the books did not make him enough money so he began selling perfumes that he made himself. This proved quite popular and he stopped selling books to create a perfume laboratory. He soon added other cosmetics to his catalog and the California Perfume Company was born.
It was decided that the company needed a new name for successful international expansion and, in 1939, the company changed its name to Avon Products Inc. in honor of the English town Stratford-on-Avon. Today, Avon has more than 5 million representatives and these sellers can be found in almost every country of the world. Most of the products are still available in this manner, but some products are beginning to be sold In certain department stores.
