In 1954, Burger King was co-founded by James McLamore and David Edgerton. The first restaurant, originally called Insta Burger King, was opened in Miami, Florida. McLamore and Edgerton decided to expand nationally by using a franchising system and formed the Burger King Corporation in 1959.
