Who Founded Facebook
Facebook is the most popular social networking site online today. It is where people can keep in touch and share comments and photographs of their everyday lives. It was launched in February of 2004 and has more than 600 million active members. The name comes from a book that is given out at the start of academic year at Untied States universities. It contains a picture of each student with their name to help familiarize the students with each other. Anyone 13 years of age or older can have their own Facebook page.
Who Founded Facebook?
Facebook was founded by Mark Zukerberg. The original idea for Facebook was launched in October 2003 and was similar to the Hot or Not site. It had two photos of students attending Harvard and viewers were asked to vote and comment on who was the best looking. To do this Zukerberg had to hack the Harvard database and got into trouble for breaching security and the privacy policy. Zukerberg even faced expulsion, but the charges were dropped. The next semester, Zukerberg started writing code for a new social networking site. He worked in conjunction with three Harvard seniors named Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra, who were trying to develop a social networking site called harvardconnection.com. On February 4th, 2004 thefacebook.com was launched. The three Harvard seniors that Zukerberg had worked with filed a lawsuit against him claiming that he mislead them about his intentions and developed a competing site to their own. The claim was settled outside of court.
Facebook was originally only open to Harvard university students, but in March of 2004 it opened its membership to Stanford, Columbia and Yale. It then opened to other Ivy League school and then almost all of the universities in the United States and Canada. September of 2005 saw the launch of the high school version of Facebook, to join people had to be invited. Facebook then expanded into businesses such as Apple Inc and Microsoft. Finally in September of 2006 Facebook was opened up to anyone aged 13 or over with a valid email account.
Facebook has gained so much popularity that there has been a movie made about the development of Facebook. It is loosely based on actual events and is called The Social Network.
