Who Invented the Electric Drill
A drill is a tool that can be used for cutting or for drilling holes into various types of materials such as wood, metal and plastics. A drill bit can be interchanged to change the diameter of the hole made or the action of the drill. An electric drill is a handheld tool that is powered by electricity rather than being hand cranked. Electric drills can have power cords or run from a battery (these are called cordless drills). Electric drills allow for different speeds and applications such as drilling, grinding or screwing. So who invented the electric drill? Read this article to find out.
Who invented the electric drill?
Drilling machines had been around for many years prior to the invention of the electric drill. With the invention of the electric motor, the electric drill was born. Arthur James Arnot and William Blanch Brain of Melbourne, Australia, were the first to patent a drill with a electric motor in 1889. These two men are credited with the invention of the modern electric drill. The first people to produce a handheld electric drill were two brothers from Stuttgart, Germany. Wilhem & Carl Fein created a handheld drill in 1895 and by 1900 were incorporating aluminum parts to make the drill lighter and easier to use. In 1917 a trigger was added to the handheld drill by Black & Decker who patented the idea.
Since 1917 the electric drill has continued to be adapted and developed. It is now possible to get hammer drills which can provide a hammer action for masonry work. You can also get a rotary hammer drill which combines the hammer action with a rotational action. Electrically drills can also be cordless allowing greater applications.
