Who was the first female pharaoh?
Throughout modern history, there has been much debate about the first female Pharaoh.
The first known female ruler of Egypt is Sobekneferu, but there are at least 6 other women who may have ruled Egypt before this. She ruled Egypt by herself for nearly four years and used both the masculine and feminine titles common to a pharaoh from her time. With the current evidence available she is considered, by many historians at least, to be the first female pharaoh.
Hatshepsut was once believed to be the first female pharaoh, but most historians no longer support this view. She was certainly the most successful female ruler of Egypt and one of the most successful pharaoh’s of all time. It is believed that she became pharaoh in 1479 BC and ruled for about 22 years.
