A search engine is a tool used to search for information on the Internet (World Wide Web). Typically, a user enters the text that they are searching for and the search engine returns relevant results in a list format. Modern search engines have a number of alternative functions including: image and media search, maps and directions, equations and conversions and much more. The best known search engine is Google, which is used for the vast majority of web searches. However, Yahoo! Search and Bing are also major players. Many smaller search engines also exist and many of these are designed for niche uses. Search engines are also integrated into many websites to assist users in finding information within their site. The earliest search engines were actually in use before the World Wide Web came into existance, let’s find out which one was the first.
Baboons are a group of monkeys best known for the bright colored swelling on their behinds. Like many primates, baboons are social animals and live in troops of up to 250 animals. They are ground dwelling animals where they spend a good deal of time foraging for food. It is generally accepted that there are five species of baboons, but some experts actually believe these should be classified as subspecies. Generally, the range of these species do not overlap, although some are found relatively close together. Let’s find out where baboons live.
Chickenpox is a highly infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV). It is best known for causing an itchy skin rash, but other symptoms commonly seen include: nausea, headache, muscle pain, fatigue and low grade fever. These symptoms usually occur 10-21 days after infection and the condition usually passes without cause long term complications. The virus is an airborne disease and is spread via infected bodily fluids or direct contact with the rash. Children are most commonly affected by this disease and lifelong immunity is acquired after infection. Adults can also catch chickenpox if they did not have the infection during childhood, and are at greater risk of complications. Let’s find out how chickenpox are prevented and treated.

Later in life Armstrong received Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering and a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering and was a fully qualified Naval Aviator. He joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in 1962 and was the command pilot of The Gemini 8 and mission commander of the Apollo 11 space flight. Orangutans are great apes and one of the most intelligent species of animals on Earth. There are two species of orangutans, the Bornean and Sumatran orangutan, and each species is considered to be endangered. The Sumatran orangutan is listed as critically endangered and there are thought to be less than 7,000 left in the wild. The Bornean orangutan is listed as endangered and about 55,000 are thought to be left in the wild. Both of these species are in decline and there are concerns that they could become extinct in the future. Let’s find out why the orangutans are endangered and what is being done to save them.
The Brownlow Medal, also known as the Charles Brownlow Trophy or “Charlie”, is the most prestigious individual award in the Australian Football League (the highest professional competition of Australian Rules Football). It is awarded to the “best and fairest” player throughout the regular season. Under the current system, after each game the 3 field umpires determine the 3 best players in that game and award them 1-3 votes (3 being the best player). The player with the most votes at the end of the season is awarded the medal and multiple medals are awarded if the voting is tied. To be eligible for the award a player must not have been suspended by the AFL Tribunal during the season. The medal was first awarded in 1924, when the league was known as the Victorian Football League, and was named after Geelong footballer and administrator Charles Brownlow who died earlier that year. Let’s find out who won the inaugural Brownlow Medal.
The Etch A Sketch is a children’s drawing toy that has remained popular since its introduction. The basic Etch A Sketch features a gray screen and red frame with a knob on each side of the bottom of the toy. These knobs can be twisted to create lines on the screen. The left knob creates horizontal lines and the right creates vertical lines. The inside surface of the screen is coated with aluminium powder and a stylus scrapes the powder away as the knobs are turned to create the lines. This is a relatively simple device, but has been rated as one of the best toys of all time. It was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1998. Today, the Etch A Sketch is owned by the Ohio Art Company. Let’s find out who invented this popular toy.
Bacteria are single celled organisms that have a cell wall, but lack many of the organelles found in more complex cells. They are found virtually everywhere on Earth and it is estimated that could be as many as a billion different species of bacteria. The best known bacteria are those that cause infections in humans, but most are harmless and some are actually helpful for human health. Bacteria are also well known for their small size, which allows them to take in the required nutrients and expel waste products. The average size of a bacteria is 2 micrometers in length with a diameter of just 0.5 micrometers. Almost all species of bacteria are invisible to the naked eye and a microscope is required to view them. However, at least one species of bacteria is large enough to see with human eyes.
